In class we looked at Kickstarter, a website that people pitch their ideas and how much money they need to raid to help with their projects.
People can upload videos and pictures and explain their idea and watch the donations come in.
There were a lot with just picture and text, but we looked at the videos.
After watching a few, there were some common trends appearing, not all positive. For example some lacks information and we were still asking questions after watching the pitch.
Illustrated Bible -

1m16s
- It was very ‘adversity’, with a voice over and no people present to look at... lacking connection and personal communication. You could see where they had put their money into a flashy advert.
+ The animation itself was of high standard, using diagrams and icons to help separate the different stories and sections with in the book, showing a ’search’ system by colour. It was an effective animation in the information given.
Blossom of youth

1m30s
+ Photos of the illustrations shown on a washing line, a different way of presenting.
+ A few spreads accompanied by music.
- No information shown in video, all written below.
Below, it mentions that the donators will receive notebooks, wrapping paper and badges with different designs. They weren’t mentioned in the video.
The illustrations all looked beautiful and intricate, but not all exactly the same style. I first thought it was a graphic novel, it is actually a collection of pictures not related in story but in theme.
It hasn’t reached it’s funding and so won’t be made.
Interactive colouring book
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1729635775/an-interactive-book-of-illustrated-characters-and/description
38s
+ Fast paced, funky.
+ Shows lots of the work available.
- No information given in video, in means of text or voice over.
- No spreads of what the book would look like, it says it’s an interactive colouring book but doesn’t show how or why it’s different to other colouring books.
It was impressive to begin with and exciting, however we were left no knowing much more about the project then we did in the beginning.
New Hampshire Calendar

3m07s
+ Explained what she would do with the money and why she needs it.
- Two minuets into talking and felt attention drift - the camera frame was her face in a dimly lit room, poorly focused, with no images of her work. All 3m07 is her talking.
She could have voiced over her pictures to break the monotonous visual, or shown preliminary sketches as to how she came to the design.
She has however been fully funded for her project. People love New Hampshire.
Animal Playing cards
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1848204686/animal-playing-cards-illustrated-art-deck?ref=nav_search
We thought this video was the best out of the ones we saw, as she was talking to us on a personal level, from her studio, showing how and where she worked. She showed preliminary sketches and how she came to her ideas.
The camera however was out of focus, but what she was explaining was clear. By showing us the unfinished sketches, we can look forward to what the finished product will be and that your money will help her finish them.
She said what format and materials she’ll use, as well as where her inspiration came from. It was nice to know about the background of the project.
Kickstarter actually recommends a video, and states that 80% do and have a higher success rate in finding.
They have a helpful page as to what to include in your video ...
